Can’t you just smell the salty breeze and feel the warming rays of the sun as you daydream about a day on the water with Destiny Harbor Tours? Let Captain Tom (Drohan) and his staff do the work as you relax on one of his several boats on Puget Sound.

Launching from Gig Harbor, near Anthony’s restaurant and from their berth near the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Destiny Harbor Tours offers regularly scheduled sightseeing trips and once-in-a-lifetime special charters on the southern reaches of Puget Sound. Whether you seek to view marine wildlife, learn the area’s rich maritime history or just kick back for some sunshine, you won’t soon forget your experience on these tours.

On our recent trip, we viewed sea lions, harbor seals and even got a glimpse of a pod of beautiful and very shy porpoise. Seagulls, cormorants and fish ducks did fly-bys on a regular basis. No orcas on this trip. Darn it. As a photographer, I was in heaven. I’m glad I brought along a second memory card.

For those of you that used to own a boat, we all know that the two best days of boat ownership are the day you buy a boat and the day you sell it. Boat ownership isn’t for everyone. But you can still get out on the water on a Destiny tour.

Tom and his staff of Coast Guard certified captains share a wealth of information about the history of the area. You’ll learn about the fishing heritage of Gig harbor, tour Tacoma’s working port or take a tour down the Tacoma narrows to hear about “Galloping Gertie”, the famous original Tacoma Narrows bridge which fatefully collapsed in the 1940s during a windstorm (Tom says it still lays on the sea floor with friendly (?) octopus living in the debris).

The Destiny fleet includes “Riviera”, a 46 foot, Northwest built wooden charter boat and “Destiny” and “Maritime”, authentic, restored U.S. Navy boats. One- and two-hour tours are available You can also reserve a private charter for just your group (of 1 to 33 people) for a duration of your choosing (up to a full day charter).

Next time we’ll take a sunset tour. That is going to be a special treat. We can’t wait to see the fiery orange sky highlights on the Olympic mountain range and majestic Mount Rainier. We recommend the tour for special events, receptions and birthdays. Masks aren’t required for vaccinated guests. You can book online at rivieracruises.net or call them at 253-225-6306.
